Training a puppy made me a better teacher.
Children and puppies respond to their surroundings and quickly learn boundaries and expectations. Both love to play, both seek approval, and both learn how to get what they want.
In training Java to hold her “Down” position, I’ve witnessed myself getting impatient and frustrated, and Java responds likewise. She tries to cajole me into sitting up, her preferred position of obedience. When I am calm and firm, when I am positive and complimentary, when I clearly state what I want and what the consequences are, Java replies by doing what I ask of her.
Not a bad life lesson.
